Nope... we clearly don't! We wear red lipstick whenever we so please and we wear it for ourselves to feel sassy AF. So while we are nearing Valentine's Day please treat this as any other post and not one falling into the commercial nonsense that is Valentine's Day.
Below you will find five favourite reds of mine, which is coming from someone that has to feel totally comfortable with the tone and formula of such a bold colour before pulling off a red lip!
The Bright Orange Red Lip - MAC Liptensity in Habanero
£14.55 World Dute Free here
Habanero is the latest addition to my red lip collection and is a delightful warm orange-red in a cream finish. Using High-Frequency Tetrachromatic Pigments technology (I know, a total mouthful) MAC have managed to create a range of 24 shades in the Liptensity range that really do offer the best pigmentation possible. Expect one stroke to be enough of this cream formula that will feel comfortable and stay put for hours. What I love about this shade (the below swatch doesn't do it justice sadly - think bolder and more orange toned) is that it's instantly brightening against the skin and truly is a glossy pop of colour all year round! I love this lipstick A LOT!
The Crimson Matte Lip - Gosh Liquid Matte Lips in The Red 009
£8.99 Superdrug In-store
A new addition to Gosh's Liquid Matte Lips collection here, being the 9th shade in the lineup of liquid matte lipsticks. This almost crimson red gives a perfect matte effect to the lips however it never fully dries down so you should expect a slightly dried down tacky feel, which I personally prefer over dry and uncomfortable matte lips. Due to the formulation, this range of liquid lipsticks lasts hours without fading and for the price point really is impressive! If you are after a vampy red matte lip
The Iconic Red Lip - MAC Retro Matte in Ruby Woo
£17.50 Look Fantastic here
MAC Ruby Woo is described as a very matte vivid blue red with a retro matte finish. It's also one of MAC's most popular shades, especially when it comes to reds. For me, this is a very old school glamour look as the formula is slightly dragging on application but benefits from looking totally matte on the lips and lasting very well indeed. It's also a red that makes your teeth appear whiter and suits all skin tones! A total staple in my lipstick collection.
The Perfect Red Metallic - Smashbox Be Legendary Liquid Metal in Crimson Chrome
£16.15 World Duty Free here
If you have enough red lipsticks in your makeup collection then you may want to try something new, such as a metallic finish lipstick. Smashbox's Crimson Chrome couldn't be more perfect for this as this liquid lip formula glides on with the full coverage of a lipstick and the high shine of a gloss in a single coat and gives the nicest metallic finish I've come across. I'm talking high shine, smooth and with a metallic foil effect! The formula is also spot on feeling beyond comfortable and not at all tacky on the lips. It also comes with a subtle fruit scent which I quite like.
The Perfect Red Gloss - L'Oreal Paris Infallible Matte Lip Gloss in Forgive My Sin 402
Reduced £2.69 eBay here
Lastly, I wanted to feature an oldie but a goodie, that is no longer sold at Boots but can be found on eBay and other discounted sites for under £3! Although described as a matte liquid lipstick this is definitely more of a gloss finish that feels smooth and creamy on the lips. Highly pigmented for such an inexpensive lip product I really do love this red a lot! My only gripe would be that it does come with a violet scent which does seem a bit much for a lip product.
